From Webomancy...

"So if Mel Gibson's new genre really is religious slasher flicks, what can we expect next? Something based on the writings of Adam von Bremen, maybe? I suspect the "enlightened Christian describing the barbaric heathens" would be very much Gibson's thing."

religious slasher flicks ---- Brilliant appellation.

The Droughtlanders Book One In Triskelia Series; Carrie Mac

When I first picked this book up at the library, I had no idea that it was YA, though the age of the protagonist (and his whines and confusion - early character establishment was not, imo, particular well-written) soon gave it away. It's a distopian fantasy; it began dramatically, and violently, with the VC as an emotionally conflicted observer. There are the typical elements of the genre - issues of love and loss, new friendships and self-discovery - but also many darker elements: conspiracy, terrorism, political coverups, and civic abuses driven by fears of security.

It's the first in a trilogy, and by the end of the book, I cared about (or hated) enough of the characters that I'll read the other books. But it took a while to get me there; despite occasional flaws and fantasical elements, it was a dismally realistic, but not particular pleasant, read. I found it hard-going at first (I'm not fond of cruelty for the sake of beating you over the head with how utterly cruel a cruel character can be - I prefer more subtle vileness). By the end (whose events struck me as a tad deus-ex-machina overkill) old sins and resentments weren't forgotten, though efforts were made to forgive (personally, I doubt they'll really stick), and there are still complex personal issues to be faced along with the disaster thrust upon them in the last pages.
